The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down
Throughout this website, I will be referring to the groundbreaking book, The Spirit
Catches You and You Fall Down written by Anne Fadiman. This book serves as an example of what happens when there is a lack of cultural competency, communication, and understanding. This book is an account of a Hmong
family and their American-born child, Lia Lee, who has epilepsy. A lack of
cultural understanding prevented her from receiving optimal medical treatment.
After "the big one", a severe grand mal seizure, she remained in a persistent vegetative state. We will look at what were the obstacles to her care and how applied medical anthropology could have help overcome them for Lia Lee and her family.
Below is a
video clip that highlights key events in the Lee family's journey from war-torn Laos to Merced, California
